I've recently started rating my music and I was Googling around for the different ways people employ the system in iTunes. It's nice to see my way of doing things is just about the mirror of yours! I'll keep doing what I'm doing. :-)

However I was reading that when you just click the stars, iTunes doesn't embed that in the song file... so if for some reason iTunes becomes corrupted - you just lost all your ratings. So I also take the extra step of putting the number of stars I've assigned to a song in the 'comments' section. It's my understanding this DOES embed in the song file and if anything ever happens to my iTunes, I can just create playlists based on the comments section.

Anyways... Thanks!

Great write-up, I really like your definitions on the ratings. I found I rated songs too often based on my mood, and didn't agree with them later, so I buried my OCD and stopped rating songs altogether, but you've inspired me to pick it back up.
